Bridal makeup for NRI brides: planning a Punjab wedding from Canada, UK or Australia
A practical planning guide for NRI brides booking bridal makeup for a Jalandhar or Punjab wedding from abroad — trials, timing, jet lag and what to lock in early.

Every wedding season, a good share of the brides we work with are landing in Punjab from Toronto, Surrey, Birmingham, Melbourne or Auckland with ten days on the ground and five functions to get through. If that’s you, the makeup is rarely the hard part — the planning around it is. Here’s how to do it without the last-minute panic.
Lock the date and the artist before you lock anything else
It’s tempting to sort the venue, the caterer and the outfits first and leave makeup for “closer to the date.” For a Punjab wedding in peak season — November to February, plus April-May weekends and popular muhurat days — that’s a mistake. Good artists in Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar and Chandigarh get booked out months ahead, especially for multi-day bookings that need an artist free for roka, mehndi, the wedding day and reception all in one trip. If your family is in or near Phagwara, where a large share of NRI families have roots, the same booking pressure applies — ask early, even while you’re still finalising flights.
As soon as you have a date, reach out on WhatsApp through our contact page with your function list: how many events, which days, approximate timings, and your outfit colours if you know them. We’ll hold the date with a written quote — see our honest breakdown of what bridal makeup actually costs in Punjab if you want to understand the ranges before you ask.
The trial has to happen in person, in Punjab
A video call is genuinely useful — we can talk through your outfits, your skin’s current state, whether you want HD or airbrush, and look at reference photos together before you’ve even landed. But a trial done over video cannot account for how your skin will actually behave once you’re here. Three things change the moment you land:
- Climate. Dry, air-conditioned winters in Canada or the UK behave very differently from Punjab’s own winter fog and dust, or its humid pre-monsoon heat. Skin that looks fine on a video call can go patchy, dry or oily within days of arriving.
- Jet lag and sleep debt. Puffiness, dullness and under-eye shadows after a 16-20 hour journey are real, and a good base routine accounts for them rather than fighting them on the day.
- Water and food. Even with care, a change in water and diet shows on the skin faster than people expect.
So the plan we recommend to every NRI bride: land with at least a few free days before the first function, and book an in-person trial in that window. See our guide on what to expect at a bridal makeup trial for how to use that session well — bring your actual outfit or a clear photo and swatch, not just a Pinterest board.
Build a realistic function-by-function schedule
NRI weddings often compress a full Punjabi wedding calendar — roka, chunni chadana, mehndi, sangeet, haldi or maiyan, the Anand Karaj or pheras, and the reception — into one tight week or ten days, sometimes with the family’s India visit doing double duty for other relatives’ functions too. Before you fly, write out:
- Every function, its date and its start time (not the time on the invite — the time hair and makeup actually needs to begin, factoring in team size and whether hair, draping and family makeup are included).
- Which looks need to be dramatically different from each other. Your mehndi and reception looks should not read as the same face in different jewellery — see our note on why a reception look needs to be its own look, not a repeat of the wedding day.
- Travel time between venues if functions are split across Jalandhar, a farmhouse outside the city, or a hotel in Ludhiana or Chandigarh.
Share this schedule with your artist as early as possible. A team that knows the full week in advance can plan timings, product choices (long-wear for an outdoor baraat, lighter builds for an indoor daytime mehndi) and travel between venues properly — a team that finds out the week itself cannot.
Skin prep you can start before you even board the flight
You don’t need to be in Punjab to start getting your skin ready. Two to three weeks before you fly:
- Simplify your routine rather than trying new products — this is not the week to experiment with a new serum you saw online.
- Prioritise sleep and hydration over anything topical; long-haul travel dehydrates skin more than most people budget for.
- If you’re prone to breakouts around stress or travel, see a dermatologist at home for anything active well before you leave — not the week you land, when there’s no time to let a reaction settle.
For the Punjab-specific side of skin prep once you’re here — what the weather does and how to counter it — our bridal makeup page and packages overview are a good starting point for what’s included and how we structure multi-day bookings.
The one thing to avoid
Don’t try to finalise everything by email or messages alone and skip the in-person conversation entirely. The brides who have the smoothest week are the ones who land, do the trial, and adjust the plan in person if something needs to change — rather than discovering a mismatch on the morning of the wedding. Message us on WhatsApp via the contact page with your dates as soon as you have them, and we’ll build the week around you, not the other way round.
Questions brides ask about this
How early should an NRI bride book her makeup artist?
As soon as the wedding date and venue are fixed — ideally 4-6 months out. Peak Punjab wedding season (November-February) books out fast, and NRI brides often land only a week or two before the functions, which leaves no room to search for an artist at the last minute.
Can the trial happen over a video call if I can't visit before the wedding?
A video consultation is useful for discussing the look, outfit colours and any skin concerns in advance, but it cannot replace an in-person trial. We strongly recommend an in-person trial in the days after you land, before the functions begin, so the final look is tested on your actual skin in Punjab's weather and light.
What should I pack or prepare before flying in for the wedding?
Bring the outfits (or at least clear photos and swatches) for every function, any skincare you're currently using, and a realistic list of events with dates. Start hydrating and sleeping well a few days before you fly — jet lag and dry cabin air show up on the skin faster than most brides expect.
Do you charge extra for NRI bookings?
No special NRI rate — pricing depends on the number of events, technique and team size, the same as any booking. We send a written quote on WhatsApp once we know your functions and dates.
